A Rs 50 crore project to improve the supply of drinking water has been sanctioned by the Central Government for the special problematic areas of Haryana falling within the jurisdiction of National Capital Region.
An official spokesman said that seven schemes costing Rs 35 crore had been sanctioned for the towns of Bahadurgah, Gohana, Rewari, Jhajjar, Sonipat and Panipat.
He said that supply of drinking water was augmented in 2408 villages during last three years. Also, drinking water was provided at 3889 rural schools and 733 new tubewells and 251 new water houses were set up and capacity of 536 water houses was enhanced. This benefited 48.25 lakh people at a cost of Rs 3.08 crore.
He said that a sum of Rs 140 crore had been earmarked for augmentation of drinking water supply schemes during the current financial year. In the Mewat area of Gurgaon, 200 new tubewells, 48 boosting stations were set u and 422 km long pipleines were laid during 1999-2003. A sum of Rs 52.35 crore was spent on water supply schemes in 30 towns.
He said that a sum of Rs 225.19 crore would be spent in the first phase of the proposed Ghasggar Action Plan in the towns of ambala Cantt, Ambala City, Kaithal, Narwana and Sirsa. A sum of Rs 200 crore had been spent on commissioning 13 sewerage treatment plants in seven towns located along river Yamuna. Also, 455 shallow tubewells were dug up to augment the supply of drinking water in summer season.
