TANSEN AWARDEE Ustad Asad Ali Khan's conversation with God through 'Rudra Veena', an instrument believed to be created by Lord Shiva for Parvati, left the audience spell-bound here at NCZCC on Thursday.
The mesmerising performance together with informative lecture demonstration on classical music, especially 'Rudra Veena' an instrument, which can execute all the subtleties of human voice in the purest musical sound was well received by the audience comprising mainly school kids.
The undisputed master of 'Alap', the Ustad set the mood with creation of 'Om' and followed with the introduction 'Miyan ki Todi'. Mohan Shyam Sharma accompanied the Ustad on pakhawaj. The enthralling performance was followed by the question-answer session wherein enthusiastic kids shot questions related to different schools of music and gharanas. They were also briefed on the history of classical music. Exhorting students to make efforts to preserve and propagate Indian classical music, the Ustad said 'Shastriya Sangeet' is not mere music. It is associated with yoga, religion and the way of life.
Terming the 'sadhna' as tough, he took a dig at modern singers, who claim themselves to be the masters of music. "To master the music is impossible. It is like ocean and one life is just not enough to learn it," he said. Earlier, the Ustad paid tributes to shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan. The compering of the show was jointly done by the students of the host schools. SP Singh, co-ordinator, SPIC MACAY, UP and Dr Madhu Shukla, co-ordinator SPIC MACAY Allahabad Chapter, were also present on the occasion. Anju Tandon, principal Army School and Rina Singh, principal SMC, Ghoorpur, presented gifts to the artistes. The vote of thanks was proposed by Vartika Kesarwani, head girl of SMC, Ghoorpur.
