West Indies fined for maintaining slow over rate

West Indies had salt rubbed into the wound of their exit from the ICC Champions Trophy when they were fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their rain-hit Group B match against South Africa at Sophia Gardens, in Cardiff.

Match referee Andy Pycroft imposed the fines after West Indies were ruled to be one over short of its target at the end of the 31-over match last night, after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, and in particular the regulations contained therein governing minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10% of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount, an ICC statement said.

As such, Bravo was fined 20% of his match fee while his team mates received 10% fines.

The offence is contrary to Article 2.5.1 of the Code. The penalty was accepted by West Indies without contest so there was no need for a hearing.

India are the other side from Group B to have already qualified for the semifinals of the ongoing Champions Trophy.
