“THE TOTAL wheat production is expected to be more this year in comparison to last year’s yield in the country,” said Dr GC Mishra, agricultural scientist and faculty member of the Institute of Agriculture Sciences at Banaras Hindu University.

Talking to Hindustan Times here on Friday, Dr Mishra said this year, wheat production was expected to touch 75 million tonne, which was more than last year’s production of 72 million tonne in the country.
“Sowing of wheat took place in the area of around 27 million hectare this year while last year it was sowed in the area of 24 million hectare,” he said, adding that wheat sowing area was 12 per cent more compared to last year’s wheat sowing area.Dr Mishra further said good rainfall during October and November was one of the main reasons for the expected increase in the wheat yield in the country.
“An average rainfall during monsoon and post-monsoon season was comparatively good this year while the distribution of rainfall was different in the country this year,” he said.
“The underground water-level has also increased about 134 per cent more in comparison to last year’s ground water-level,” he added. However, the Centre expected 78 million tonne of wheat production this year, but due to little rainfall in the winter season and an unexpected increase in temperature in the northern parts of the country, the expected production of wheat will decrease and come to around 75 million tonne, he said.
