As I indulge in the pleasure of scanning this month’s sprawl of magazines, I am reliably informed that this winter, women have two looks to choose from— top of the latest catwalk trends are the pseudo-masculine “androgynous” look or the “baby doll” pose.

As one magazine enthuses, “you don’t need to be pre-teen to achieve this season’s trend of Lolita-style innocence. With the right make-up you can fake your way to an angelic baby face.”

Women are expected to squeeze and primp their body into either the figure of a svelte young man or prepubescent girl. Voluptuous and curvaceous women are out.

It is the same old tired story. The trendsetters portray that the only acceptable form of femininity is if you have a waist size of a seven-year-old like Victoria Beckham or an almost invisible profile like Keira Knightly.

In a consumerist society obsessed with appearances and celebrity worship, the sole motto of mature women is to be anorexic and look like a prepubescent child.

If you don’t go for the under-nourished, haven’t-had-food-for-two-days look, then your option is the pole dancing, Playboy bunny Pamela Anderson appearance. The rule is: you’re allowed curves as long as they’re silicone.
