Amid Haryana Urban Development Authority’s (Huda) tall claims of increasing green cover in the city, the broken tree guards and dried-up plants near the authority’s office in Sector 14 present a contrasting picture.
The iron fencing and grills around saplings are in dilapidated condition and many of the trees have dried up due to lack of proper care.
For past several months, the residents’ welfare association (RWA) has been demanding that the tree-guards be repaired, but nothing has been done so far.
According to informed sources, R20 lakh was spent on the nearly 1,000 tree-guards, 100 grills and 500 saplings installed to beautify sector 14 and 15.
“We have written to the horticulture department several times to take note of the problem. Initially, our market welfare association was in touch with the authorities and used to get assurances. But since last one month, the official has gone incommunicado,” said Sunil Duggal, a shopkeeper in the Huda market.
When contacted, Huda executive engineer (horticulture), VK Nirala said, “I am not aware of the bad condition of tree-guards in Sector 14. I think the area falls into the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon.”

But surprisingly, the broken tree-guards a few steps away from his office have not caught his attention as yet.
Residents have decided to apprise him about the situation. “We will urge the Huda administrator to look into the matter,” said Mahipal Singh, a resident of Sector 14.
