Millions of voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in 102,000 polling stations for 30 seats, mostly spread over central and southern Uttar Pradesh.

Security was tight, with 190,000 security personnel being deployed.

Of the 1,138 candidates contesting from the state this time, 432 are in the fray in this phase.

Voting began at 7 a.m., with urban areas in this crucial constituency, where Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the star candidate, reporting brisk polling.

This city alone has 32 candidates - the highest in the state.

With a whopping 1.6 million voters eligible to vote here, two electronic voting machines were deployed at each of the 2,100 polling booths in Lucknow.
