Wife No. 2 shows up, Wife No. 1 attempts suicide

JUST HOURS before the body of slain Indian engineer K. Suryanarayana was flown in from Afghanistan for last rites, a woman claiming to be his second wife surfaced in the city, demanding a share of the compensation declared for his family.

Swapna, a resident of Warangal, met Cyberabad DCP (Crime) Soumya Mishra and sought her help for a last glimpse of the body. She said Suryanarayana's first wife Manjula had denied her entry into the house.

The twists did not end there. In the evening, Manjula consumed phenyl at her residence and had to be hostpitalised. Her condition was stated to be out of danger.

Sources in the police said Manjula was depressed on coming to know of the "other woman's" claim -- beamed throughout the day on TV. The other possible reason could be that she had threatened to end her life if the government failed to secure her husband's release from the Taliban.

Earlier in the day, Swapna, who is in her late 20s, claimed Suryanarayana had married her in August 2002 in Warangal and produced photographs as evidence of their "love marriage". She had a nine-month-old daughter, Nitisha, from him, she claimed.
