Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University finance officer SP Singh had lodged an FIR at the Cantonment police station against director of Journalism and Mass Communication Prof RD Rai and 50 students of his department in connection with a scuffle in his room at the university guesthouse.

Now, Prof Rai’s wife Nilmati has accused the police administration of harassing her by conducting raids on her residence twice or thrice a day.

She appealed to her ‘absconding’ husband Prof Rai to surrender in court and face the situation bravely.

Police lodged an FIR against Rai under sections 427, 452, 423 and others of the IPC. Since then, Prof Rai has been evading both the police and the media.

Meanwhile, Gorakhpur University students’ union president Rajiv Pandey also lodged a complaint that Rai was threatening to kill him. Police also conducted a raid in search of Sandeep Singh, an inmate of NC Hostel.

On Monday, Nilmati Rai, who is also a lecturer at AD Government Girls’ Inter College, said a well-planned conspiracy was hatched against Prof Rai. She said students’ union president Rajiv Pandey was keen to bag a contract to supply tents for the proposed convocation.

Prof Rai, who is also a member of the organising committee for the convocation, had refused to succumb to Pandey’s pressure, he added.

Calling the charges against her husband baseless, she demanded a high-level inquiry. She criticized the “mysterious silence” maintained by the University Teachers’ Association and the vice-chancellor on the issue.

She also alleged that some teachers and peons had not got their stipend for the last five months, as the finance officer refused to pass a the bills.
