A group of six wild elephants has created havoc in the forested areas of Chhattisgarh's Koriya district for the past three days attacking houses and destroying crops, officials said on Friday.
Since Tuesday, about 250 people of Chandha and Gidher villages of the district under the Sonhat area, about 520 kms north of Raipur, have been spending sleepless nights as at least six rogue elephants are visiting routinely creating havoc, a local forest official told IANS by phone on Friday.
"These people from about 55 families have lost sleep as the elephants have demolished their mud-made houses and destroyed their recently sowed paddy crops," the official said.
He added: "Luckily, the elephants have so far caused losses to property only and not to life but the villagers are planning to move out of their villages for a brief period to get rid of the wild elephants."
Chhattisgarh reports dozens of human deaths annually besides huge losses to property due to man-elephant conflicts in the three districts of Surguja, Jashpur and Koriya.
Officials say that the government is working on creating a safe corridor for wild elephants in its northern region to find a permanent solution to the rising number of man-elephant conflicts.
