The incident occurred late Sunday in Hajira village, near Himmatnagar, in Sabarkantha district, some 80 km from Ahmedabad.

"Megana Ranjitsinh Makwana's 12-month-old son died during treatment at the hospital in Himmatnagar while Kajal, 7, Kinjal, 4, and Megana herself succumbed to burn injuries at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital where they were rushed in a precarious condition," HK Rana, a police official told IANS.

"The reason behind the incident is not yet clear. Her husband Ranjitsinh who is a truck driver was out when Megana alongwith her children bolted the room from inside before setting herself and the kids on fire," Rana said.

"Hearing the screams, her in-laws, who were sleeping in the other room broke open the door to see the four badly burnt," Rana said.
