Anita, wife of seaman petty officer Charanpal Ranvir Singh Rawat (39), has been admitted to the ICU at the Navy Hospital and is not in a position to give her statement to police.

However, according to Rawat’s statement and confession made before the navy police by her boyfriend- turned- assailant, Anita was having an affair with RA Chandran (31) for the last three years.

Anita and Chandran, who stay in different localities in Navy Nagar at Colaba knew each other as their daughters went to the same school and were friends. They had decided to leave their families and elope to get married.

According to Cuffe Parade Police Station police inspector (crime) Vilas Bhole, Chandran came to Rawat’s building on February 13 and called Anita down to talk. Rawat instead came down and asked Chandran what he wanted to ask his wife. “Chandran told Rawat that he loved her and wanted to take her away,” said Bhole.

Enraged with Anita, Chandran on the evening of Valentine’s Day went up to terrace of Rawat's building at New Navy Nagar and climbed down the bamboo stilts and sneaked into Rawat’s house.

“Chandran went to Anita’s bathroom. He locked the door from inside and stabbed Anita 11 times in her chest, stomach and abdomen before cutting his wrist,” said Bhole.

Chandran, lodged in a lockup at Azad Maidan, has been remanded to police custody till Saturday by court.
