A mother of five confined to a dark room of her home in Shajapur district for the past eight years has been 'rescued' by the police and woman and child development officials.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that after the birth of her fifth child in 2006, the 45-year-old Fehmida had become mentally disturbed. Because of her ailment, her husband Zakir Hussain had married another woman.
As she had not been seen for a long time, her neighbours recently informed the police who, along with a team of woman and child development department, visited the house. They found Fehmida in a dark room littered with dirty utensils.
Asked when Fehmida last stepped out of the room, the family members replied that "she had kept herself locked".
The police recorded her statement and after preliminary medical examination, handed her over to her family members.
When contacted, district project officer of WCD Sunita Yadav said it would be better for her to stay with her family members.
"The department has asked some supervisors to monitor her condition regularly," she added.
