Woman killed, traffic hit by landslides, cloudburst

A woman pilgrim from Bihar was buried alive today and several were injured in two separate incidents of landslides and cloudburst triggered by heavy rains in Uttarakhand which also blocked vehicular traffic on Rishikesh-Badrinath highway.

A woman pilgrim from Bihar was buried alive today and several were injured in two separate incidents of landslides and cloudburst triggered by heavy rains in Uttarakhand which also blocked vehicular traffic on Rishikesh-Badrinath highway.

The pilgrim was killed and several were injured when heavy landslides followed by incessant rains hit Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway at Birahi area of Chamoli district early today, police said.

The 50-year-old woman, identified as Pramila Rai, along with her husband and others, was staying in the Tapovan resort when the landslides hit the area. While all the other people managed to run for safety, Pramila was buried alive under the debris, they said. The couple, resident of Dabhanga area in Bihar, were on their way back from Badrinath pilgrimage.

The landslides also flattened a part of (Directorate General of Border Road) DGBR camp also. The vehicular traffic on national highway leading to Badrinath shrine at Birahi has also been blocked due to the landslides. The police and DGBR personnel have been deployed to clear the debris from the road.
