In a major embarrassment for Delhi police, the Delhi High Court has directed the CBI to solve the mysterious disappearance of a 26-year-old woman from a police station in the Capital.
A division bench of Justice PK Bhasin and Justice Najmi Wazri came down heavily on the police department for not only failing to trace the woman after almost two years of her disappearance, but also dragging its feet on action against suspected police officials.
“Despite the fact that strong suspicion was against some police officials posted at the concerned police station for their involvement in the disappearance of petitioner’s daughter, and despite the fact that an FIR under Section 365 IPC was registered and suspected police officials stand suspended already, no positive result is coming up,” the bench said.
The court took note of the victim’s father, Ram Prasad’s submission that the police department would never bring the culprits to book because the suspects are police personnel themselves. Prasad has accused the department of “shielding” its officers. The police department had admitted that the woman disappeared under its watch and some of its officials posted at the police station were negligent. However, no action was taken against the suspects.
“There is no explanation being given from the side of the State as to why no criminal action has been initiated against any of the persons whom the police has already considered to be suspects,” the bench said.
Delhi government counsel Rajesh Mahajan told HT that the case related to the disappearance of a woman from the Pul Prahladpur police station on May 23, 2012.
Mahajan said the PCR official picked up the woman after the manager of a local tailoring hub complained against her. He said the 26-year-old went missing from the police station the same day and has not been found till Tuesday.
