A woman was arrested for allegedly selling her two sons due to poverty in Tamluk, police said on Saturday.

"29-year-old Alka Maity was arrested yesterday for selling her minor sons to two families for Rs 7,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively, following a complaint filed by her estranged husband Lakshmikanta," Tamluk police station OC Subhankar Dey said.

Alaka, who is currently staying with her father, had left Lakshmikanta two years ago due to his drinking habit, he said.

A local court remanded her to police custody and asked Lakshmikanta to look after the children, Dey said.
