Working women often lie to their husbands about how much they spend on shopping, according to a new survey. As part of the survey, around 1,500 women aged between 20 and 40 were asked whether they hide or lie about their spendings to their partner.

Around half of working women admitted hiding from their better-halves about how much money they spend on themselves.

Forty per cent of those surveyed said they had bought clothes or beauty products which they had kept secret from their husbands.

Around 80 per cent of the clothes, shoes and handbags bought were kept secret,

Daily Mail

reported quoting a survey commissioned by

Marie Claire

magazine.

"While once it was the occasional pair of new heels, now women feel compelled to regularly hide new purchases," said Trish Halpin, editor-in-chief of the magazine.

It seems the credit crunch is encouraging the habit, Halpin added.
