The look and feel of the new uniform is inspired by the most revered item in Australian cricket, the baggy green.

"The fabric has been matched to the colour of an original baggy green cap to ensure that the new, innovative shirt has its roots in the very traditions of Australian Cricket," CA said in a press release.

"All player names, numbers and other design elements will be printed in metallic gold to create a true green and gold uniform," said Tim Jackson, Marketing Director of adidas Australia who have designed the uniform.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting was enthusiastic about the new uniform.

"The baggy green is my most prized cricketing possession, as I know it is for all of the boys, and I am thrilled at the prospect of wearing a uniform that reflects the tradition of Australian cricket," he was quoted as saying in the release.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said the time was right to pay homage to true colours of Australian cricket.

"The forthcoming summer is going to be the biggest in Australian cricket history and it's only fitting that the tradition that embodies our national team will be reflected in the uniforms the players wear this year."

The Aussies will wear the new uniform for the first time in the one-day series against England in January, 2007.
