After recent shooting incident at the Central Jail, in which a prisoner was killed, jail staff launched a massive search operation on Tuesday morning. Apart from searching wards and barracks, jail officials used metal detectors to find out if any metallic object or cell phones were buried underground. They located a cell phone which was hidden inside a pit from ward No 4. Nearly 900 prisoners, serving different sentences, live in ward number 4.

Speaking to HT, jail superintendent Gopal Tamrekar said looking at mobile’s condition, it seems that it might have been hidden underground some one or two months back.

"This portion of jail is situated closer to Rajkumar over-bridge and it is possible that someone threw the mobile phone inside the jail from the bridge," said Tamrekar. However, he made it clear that the mobile phone was without a SIM card.

On Sunday, state home minister Babulal Gaur and on Monday principal secretary (jail) Meena had raised concern over the proximity of jail to the over-bridge. "Rajkumar Bridge poses a big security risk to central jail and it has been used by some people to supply sensitive materials inside jail by surpassing the security cover," Gaur had said.

On the question of scarcity of jail guards, Meena said that they would recruit more guards soon and also deploy them as per the requirement in various jails of the state. "We are working to develop software to ease the process of meeting with prisoners and security measures in the jail will be tightened further. This software will be developed," Meena said.
