Ethiopian runners excel in Indore half marathon

Ethiopian runners Kenai Kome and Angesha Vore won the Jio Indore Marathon 2015 on Sunday. It was a half-marathon, a 21-kilometre run which they completed in one hour, 18 minutes (1.18:58) and one hour, five minutes (1:05:25) respectively.

It was a half-marathon, a 21-kilometre run which they completed in one hour, 18 minutes (1.18:58) and one hour, five minutes (1:05:25) respectively.

This was for the first time that international runners participated in a marathon organised as part of the ‘Clean, Green and Healthy Indore’ campaign.

Besides this, a heritage walk stretching up to five kilometres and a short marathon of 10 kilometres were also organised.

State urban administration minister Kailash Vijayvargiya flagged off the three events from Nehru stadium at 6:30 am in which thousands of residents took part.

During the run, hundreds of residents cheered the runners. Water was provided at many places.

Organised by the Academy of Indore Marathoners and sponsored by Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited), the runners of the half-marathon moved to Rajwada while passing through Palasia square.

After reaching Rajwada, they came back to Palasia square and ran towards LIG square and Vijay Nagar square. They returned to Nehru stadium via AB Road.

Participants of the heritage walk meandered along Geeta Bhavan square and Palasia square before returning to Nehru stadium.

In the veteran (men) category, Sameer Singh won the half-marathon.

Residents Bharat Singh Rajput and Sunil Gaud came second and third respectively.

In the veteran (women) category, Smiti Maru emerged as the top runner in the 10-km run, followed by Sapna Sojatiya and Prachi.

Abera Demelas (Ethiopia) - 1:05:42 hours

Bile Kamelas (Ethiopia) - 1:05:45 hours

Half marathon winners (Women)

Kenai Kome (Ethiopia) - 1:18:58 hours

Sinal Churchil (Ethiopia) - 1:19:09 hours

Adnane Jefri (Ethiopia) - 1:19:39 hours
