Indore: IIT Mumbai experts to probe cause for girder collapse

Technical experts from IIT-Mumbai will probe the reasons for the collapse of a girder on the railway overbridge coming up on the super corridor.

A decision to this effect came during a meeting between Indore Development Authority (IDA), Western Railway officials, Railways consultant RITES, the supervision consultant Technogem and contractor Kalyan Toll.

"The (Western) Railways has referred the matter to IIT Mumbai, which will attempt to find out the cause of the collapse and also suggest remedial measures," IDA CEO Deepak Singh told Hindustan Times after the meeting.

The eight-lane ROB, proposed along an approximate length of 900 metres and carrying a price tag of Rs 43.43 crore, will be the first facility of its kind in the state. It is expected to play a key role in ferrying pilgrims to Ujjain for the Simhastha 2016. A girder on the railway span (the portion above the railway tracks) broke during pre-stressing last month.

Meanwhile, Professor RK Ingle, a structural engineer from the National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, who was present at the meeting said the girder broke because it was pre-stressed in one go. "Prof Ingle said the pre-stressing should have been done in two parts," said an official present at the meeting.
