The National Green Tribunal (NGT), central zone bench, Bhopal has issued separate direction to the chief secretary, the district collector, Indore, and also the IMC in a matter related to pollution in Khan and Saraswati rivers that flow through Indore.
The tribunal was hearing a petition filed by social activist Kishore Kodwani in which he highlighted the fact that Khan and Saraswati rivers had been converted into polluted nullahs due to non-implementation of laws by the local authorities, the district administration and also the state government.
In the order, judicial member Justice Dalip Singh and expert member PS Rao, directed the district collector to ensure that all encroachments along river Khan and Saraswati are removed by March, 2015. The collector has also been asked to file an action taken report by March 31, 2015 in this regard.
The tribunal has also IMC commissioner to file an affidavit by March 21, 2015 stating the steps the IMC has taken to ensure that people do not dump municipal waste and construction debris in the two rivers and also on work the IMC has done for dredging and desilting the rivers.
Directions have also been given to the chief secretary, government of Madhya Pradesh to see that the matter of the river side corridor project, which has been pending with the central government since 2007, is pursued and settled as the implementation of the project would reduce pollution in the two rivers. The chief secretary has been told to file his affidavit by October 14.

{{/usCountry}}Along with this, the district administration and the IMC have been asked to furnish information with regard to steps taken within this season for initiating plantation work for development of green belt along Khan and Saraswati rivers.
The next date of hearing has been fixed for October 14.
