The Indore airport authorities will conduct a noise-mapping study and prepare an action plan based on it to reduce noise pollution. In a recent move, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a set of guidelines to major airports in the country, urging them to take steps to deal with the menace.

"Given the (aviation) industry's growth and the presence of population agglomerations near airports, large parts of population are still affected by aircraft noise," the DGCA stated recently. People living near airports have to bear the brunt of high noise pollution levels throughout the day.

The action plan will focus on how to reduce the impact of noise pollution during the landing and taking-off of flights. At present, 20 flights take off and land at the Indore airport daily. The DGCA maintained that curbing noise pollution level was one of the main priorities of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

"The DGCA wants airports to adopt a balanced approach to address noise pollution, which is based on reduction of noise at the source, land use planning and management, noise abatement operational procedures and operating restrictions," an airport official said.

The operators will have to develop a system of monitoring permissible noise limits as prescribed by the central and state pollution control boards, a DGCA official said. Airlines will also have to train pilots on how to reduce noise levels that vary depending on weather conditions, the official said.
