Worm found in mid-day meal in Indore

Over 95 girl students of Government Girls' School in Banganga area of Indore skipped their mid-day meal on Wednesday after they saw a worm in the rice served to them.

Over 95 girl students of Government Girls' School in Banganga area of Indore skipped their mid-day meal on Wednesday after they saw a worm in the rice served to them.

As a result, students of the government-run school refused to take lunch. The meal was prepared by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) Nandi Foundation.

When HT contacted the school's principal Shaligram Malviya, he said the matter has come to his notice after a large number of girls refused to eat rice and some girls threw it. When teachers asked them the reason for doing so, the students said they had seen a worm in it.

On being asked whether or not the meals are checked before it is served to students, Malviya said, "I taste the meal and note down in the daily register."

Malviya said Nandi Foundation supplies meal for total 130 students at his school at 8.30am every day and it is distributed among students during a break at 9.30am.

The NGO has been supplying food to about 1,833 government and government-aided schools in the district for the past two years. This is not the first time an insect has been found in the meal.
