At a time when the state government is making tall claims about ‘ahchhe din’ has come in the state education sector, official records show that more than 16,000 primary school students have dropped out in Jaisalmer district.
State primary education department officials fear that there are chances that these children have quit studying altogether.
Following the report, state education department officials have directed the district authorities to to find out what exactly has happened.
The shocking figure of mass drop out came to light after the recent phase of ‘pravesho utsav’ programme launched by the Rajasthan government to increase enrollment in primary schools in the district.
Under the initiative, the state education department set targets for district authorities, directing them to achieve 10% increase in the enrollment in primary schools over the previous year.
While Jaisalmer district authorities claimed that they have achieved the target but while compiling the final figures, education department officials were surprised to find that instead of an increase in enrolment, the number of student decreased by more than 20%.
Pratap Singh Kaswan, Jaisalmer district education officer (primary) confirmed the report, saying that though district authorities have achieved targets given by the department, the number of student in primary schools has reduced by 16,250.

{{/usCountry}}“I have issued show cause notices to block education officers in the three blocks and have asked them to find out the reason behind the decreased in enrollment,” he said.
A recent report of the District Information System for School Education puts the dropout rate among girls in the primary level at 8.39%, as compared to 7.76% in boys.
