A traders’ outfit and district bar association members jointly staged Alwar bandh on Friday in protest against police laxity in catching the killers of a city jeweller.
The bandh threw life out of gear as schools, train and bus services remained shut throughout the day, the traders’ claimed.
Some unidentified killers had shot jeweller Suresh Gupta dead at his residence on January 26. The next day, local jewellers’ association called on district magistrate MP Swami and demanded immediate arrest of the killers. Subsequently, the police set up eight teams to crack the case, nab the killers and find out the real motive of the murder.
However, when the police came out with no results, a joint body of 55 traders’ associations Alwar Vyaparik Mahasangh staged Alwar bandh on Friday in support with the district bar association.
President of Kedal Ganj Vypar Samiti Anil Gupta said the business community was feeling unsafe and was very much annoyed with the police which had failed to apprehend the culprits.
General secretary of Alwar Vyaparik Mahasangh O P Khandelwal expressed his anguish over police inaction and said the traders had lost faith in the police as the latter were unable to solve even petty crimes, like thefts despite being paid ‘pehredari’ for night vigils. This is the reason whey 55 traders’ associations supported the Alwar Bandh.
Saraffa Vypar Committee joint secretary Jagdish Prasad Gupta said, “Our men are very much upset with the incident. They are feeling unsafe in doing this business. The bandh was supported by the Congress. For mercentral minister Jitendra Singh said it was a matter of shame that two murders had been committed within a week and that traders themselves were patrolling around their shops.
