Self-styled godman Asaram, accused of sexually assaulting a minor, has been accused of taking to drugs in order to plead ill-health to avoid prosecution.
Deputy director of the prosecution department RL Meena, who was appointed the special public prosecutor in case against Asaram, while speaking to the media on Monday, said that the self-styled godman was deliberately delaying the trial on account of illness. “He is escaping the court hearing to delay the trial and cross-examination of the victim’s statement,” Meena said.
He said that when Asaram was taken to the MDM Hospital earlier, he denied undergoing a blood test. “He is denying a blood test just because it could disclose that he is consuming drugs,” Meena said.
The prosecutor was reacting to Asaram’s third consecutive absence and regular adjournments over cross-examination of the victim’s statements that was completed on April 21.
Meena also filed an application before the district and session judge (Jodhpur rural), who is hearing the case, to protest against the Asaram’s tactics to escape court.
“According to provisions of the POCSO Act, the victim cannot be forced for frequent court visit,” the prosecution said in the application.
They told the court that the victim has attended the court about 10 times and the accused is deliberately delaying her cross-examination.
