Just a week ago, Avantika Sharma was on top of the world after scoring 90% in the CBSE Class 12 examinations.

The fact that her aunt, Roshni, was to tie the knot in November had doubled her excitement. The 18-year-old, St Angela Sophia Senior Secondary School student, was eagerly looking forward to the day.

When Avantika and her brother, Nitesh, went out for an early morning ride with Roshni and her fiancé Rahul, little did her family realise that they were seeing all of them for the last time.

All the passengers lost their lives in an accident when a heavily-loaded truck overturned and collapsed on their car near Chomu House Circle.

On Tuesday, the scene in front of Avantika’s house was that of shock and mourning as several of her school friends stood outside, occasionally breaking down.

“The bodies have been kept at the mortuary from where they will be taken for cremation on Wednesday. Many of our relatives are coming from various places,” said Anurag Sharma, a relative.

Most of the family members and relatives were too distraught to speak.

Avantika, known as Sweety among friends and relatives, and her brother Nitesh, who was studying event management, were the children of Roshni and Jyoti’s elder brother.

Leafing through the family photos, it apparent that it was a closely-knit family, which was looking forward to November.

“We have always seen them happy. Today’s incident is heartbreaking,” said a neighbour.
