Cops rescue cows from truck in Alwar, smugglers escape

Alwar police seized a truck that was used to allegedly smuggle cattle to Haryana on Tuesday, but the smugglers managed to escape.

The truck, which bore the name of a logistics firm and had a Harayana registration, was carrying 21 cattle -- 15 cows and six bullocks. The animals have been sent to a cow shelter in Tatarpur village in Alwar district, police said.

On April 1, cow vigilantes attacked five people who were transporting milch cows from Alwar to Haryana; dairy farmer Pehlu Khan succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on April 3.

Alwar superintendent of police (SP) Rahul Prakash said the police got a tip-off on Monday night that some people were going to smuggle cows from the district to Haryana. “We barricaded all the exit points of the district,” said Prakash.

The Khairthal police station was told about the truck going from Tatarpur towards Haryana. The police used two cars to stop the truck near Mator village.

When the police went to enquire the occupants of the truck, they started throwing stones and rammed the truck into the cars. The police fired in the air, but the occupants escaped towards the hills of Shahpur. The police chased the smugglers but failed to catch them, the SP said.
