Barmer police have claimed to crack the murder case of a Dalit youth, with the arrest of the victim’s cousin on Sunday.

Police sources said the cousin of the deceased youth killed him by hitting his head with a heavy stone.

Barmer Superintendent of Police, Paris Anil Deshmukh told reporters on Sunday that Rahul, the 20-year-old accused cousin of Ajay Valmiki, had killed him out of a personal dispute.

Deshmukh said police found during investigation that both Ajay and Rahul was consuming liquor on the night of November 27 and quarrelled over an issue.

Ajay hurled a bottle of liquor at Rahul, who in turn, pelted a heavy stone that hit Ajay’s head, killing him on the spot. Later, the accused attacked Ajay on his face with the stone and fled, police said.

The SP added that after escaping the spot, the accused mixed with people on the search for Ajay. Rahul was detained on the first day of investigation but was released as community members and the deceased’s brother claimed him innocent. Police kept a tab on Rahul and arrested him on Saturday night with ample evidence.

During the interrogation, the accused accepted his crime. Police also seized a gold chain and two rings from Rahul, which he looted from Ajay’s body after the murder.

Police, with information from local residents, recovered Ajay’s body from a high school ground located at the city’s centre on Saturday morning.

Deshmukh said community members of the deceased have alleged a love affair behind the crime. Police, however, have rubbished these speculations.

Meanwhile, Dalit community members protesting outside the Barmer collectorate since the past nine days have withdrawn the agitation after police disclosed the murder mystery.
