The regional transport office (RTO) in Jaipur will accept only online applications for driving licences from Monday. Renewal of licences, issuing duplicate ones, and address change will also be done online.
Regional transport officer Kalpana Agarwal issued instructions in this regard to all district transport officers (DTOs) on Thursday. Agarwal said action would be taken against DTOs who accept driving licence applications in the paper format.
“From May 22, we will not accept driving licence applications over the counter. An applicant will have to apply online on the RTO website, and this will make the entire process more efficient,” an RTO officer said.
Paperwork takes a lot of the time while processing driving licence applications. The new system will reduce the workload and help RTO personnel in processing applications quickly.
RTO officials said the new process could curb the tout menace. Many people approach middlemen to get driving licences from the RTO.
Under the new system, people will be able to apply for licences directly. “A lot of time will be saved as applicants will have to show up for driving tests on stipulated dates; they won’t have to run from pillar to post while trying to know the status of their applications,” an official said.
