The deceased Ramlal (40) and the four others injured were working under the Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee programme in Sikandarpura area near Rajakhera town when locals objected to depositing of construction materials there, they said.

"Residents of a village then opposed the work and had an altercation with the labourers hailing from a nearby village and opened fire," a police official said.

Ramlal was declared brought dead at a nearby hospital while condition of the four others was stated to be stable.

"The accused fled from the spot immediate after the incident and a hunt is on to nab them," he said.
