At about 2:30 am, more than a dozen men in an SUV reached the bank and entered the premises by jumping over the main gate, said Yogesh Dadhich, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Jaipur South. The bank is located in the Ashok Nagar area of the city.

The DCP added that the intruders – four or five among whom were armed with handguns and iron rods – overpowered the security guard at the entrance and held him captive. “Then they managed to open one more gate of the bank. While they were trying to open the third gate, the noise alerted the police constable who was inside,” said Dadhich.

Constable Sitaram told TV channels that when he saw the men trying to break the door he called them out which made them move back a little. “I fired in the air which scared them and they fled the spot,” said Sitaram.

A case of attempt to dacoity has been registered against unidentified persons. “We have been unable to identify the men till now as they were masked. The number of their car is also not clear from the CCTV footages. But we’re trying to draw a route map of their vehicle which will provide us some clue,” said the DCP.

The police commissioner lauded the constable for his work and requested the director general of police to give him a gallantry promotion.
