The transport commissioner has asked collectors of eight districts in Rajasthan to spell out steps they have taken to curb road accidents.
Road accidents and deaths in the eight districts increased by 8% to 29% in 2016 while other districts recorded a decline, traffic police data shows.
Tonk district registered a 29% increase in road accidents, Bhilwara (22.22%), Dholpur (21.51%), Rajsamand (17.82%), Bharatpur (14.96%), Hanumangarh (11.80%), Churu (9.12%) and Dungarpur (8.02%).
In 2016, accidental deaths in the state came down to 10,465 from 10,510 in 2015. The number of accidents decreased by 1006, and of the injured by 2050.
Transport commissioner Shailendra Agarwal said district traffic advisory committees were told in 2016 to curb accidents by 5%. “On the contrary accidents have increased (in 8 districts),” Agarwal said on Thursday.
“For 2017, we have set a target of reducing accidental deaths by 8%. We have asked these districts to scientifically examine road accidents and ensure that guidelines of the Road Safety Committee of Supreme Court are followed,” he said.
“We have directed that driving licence of individuals be suspended for three months if they are found over speeding, overloading, jumping red lights, talking on phone while driving, driving drunk, without helmet, seat belt etc.”
