Bypoll result, prelude to a new dawn: Mamata

Describing her party’s win in the Bishnupur (West) assembly bypoll by a huge margin as a victory of the people, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said it was a prelude to a new dawn in West Bengal even as the CPI-M refused to describe it as a trend-setter.

Shortly after the win of Trinamool candidate Madan Mitra, Mamata told reporters in Kolkata that the victory signalled restoration of democratic rights of the people in the state.

Mitra won the bypoll by a margin of over 30,000 votes and wrested the seat from CPI-M.

CPI-M state secretary Biman Bose, however, said that the by-election result did not set any trend.

He said people might have thought what was the harm if they voted for a different party as it would not lead to any change or forming government.

Bose though admitted that his party’s views had not reached all people in the constituency.
