The WBPCC today reacted sharply to the Trinamool Congress leaders dubbing its president Manas Bhunia as being "close to CPI(M) for political survival", bringing to the fore differences between the two allies ahead of Rahul Gandhi's visit to the state tomorrow.
"The comments are in bad taste. There should be a lakshan rekha in attacking an ally. At a time when Congress and Trinamool Congress are trying to unite under Mamata Banerjee's leadership in West Bengal, agents of CPI(M) are trying to break the alliance," PCC leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy told reporters here.
He was reacting to Trinamool Congress leaders Somen Mitra and Subrata Mukherjee, who were earlier with the Congress, for their comment at the WBPCC chief's home turf at Sabong in West Midnapore district yesterday.
"Surprisingly the two leaders who were Trinamool Congress' main targets before they joined it are now attacking the Congress after leaving it," Roy, a close associate of senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee Mukherjee said.
Referring to the incident at Mangolkote in Burdwan district where a team of Congress legislators including Bhunia were attacked allegedly by CPI(M) supporters last year, Subrata Mukherjee had alleged yesterday that the Congress had made calls to the CPI(M) to protect the WBPCC leaders.
