"The party will have to declare beforehand that it would support a Congress government at the Centre after the elections," Deepa, an MLA from Goalpukhar, said.

Apparently referring to the Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, she said, "Some (TC leaders) are being sent to Sonia Gandhi and others to L K Advani. An alliance cannot be forged in this way. This is nothing, but double standards."

Deepa, along with CLP chief whip Manas Bhunia, was participating in a rally at Hazra in Banerjee's South Kolkata constituency in a bid to challenge her on her home turf.

Bhunia had recently been to Delhi to warn the AICC leaders of the pitfalls of allying with the Trinamool.

Pointing to the division in the Congress over an alliance with the Mamata Banerjee's party, state Congress working president Pradip Bhattacherjee said, "I do not subscribe to anybody's view. The decision on an alliance and its terms will be decided by the Congress High Command."
