Despite falling seriously ill, a driver of a local train today managed to bring it to its destination in Howrah district on scheduled time but died soon afterwards.

The driver, 56 year-old D N Maitra, drove the Howrah-Panskura local to Panskura railway station on time at 7:30 am and told the train guard that he was feeling very ill, South Eastern Railway sources said.

The driver was sweating profusely and the guard immediately arranged for medical assistance, the sources said. Maitra was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead on arrival, the sources said. The exact cause of the death is yet to be ascertained.
