Expect more rain in Kolkata over the next 24 hours

A low-pressure trough over the Bay of Bengal that brought scattered spells of showers across the city and a downpour that flooded parts of south and central Kolkata on Thursday, has now settled on the north-west coast of Bengal and Odisha, prompting the city met department to forecast more rains over the next twenty-four hours.

“A spell or two of heavy rains, including thundershowers could lash the city in the next 24 hours. The low-pressure over the Bay of Bengal has gathered more steam and could likely result in more showers in the city,” said an expert at the Indian Meteorological Department’s regional office in Alipore on Sunday.

In a bizarre instance of localised showers on Thursday, a short, sharp spell of rain left a significant swathe of south and central Kolkata under water, even as the north barely received a trickle. The Alipore met office recorded the season’s highest 110.6 mm of rain on Thursday.

“Now, the shift of the lowpressure trough further northeast has resulted in cool, moisture-laden winds gushing in from the Bay of Bengal. The prevailing weather pattern has resulted in huge columns of cumulonimbus clouds forming over the coast and these could drift further inland and cause heavy rains over the next few days,” GC Debnath, director of the Alipore met office said.

The showers left a vast swathe of south Kolkata, including Deshapriya Park , Bhowanipore, Elgin Road, Camac Street and Rabindra Sadan, inundated. While Kalighat alone recorded 150mm of rain, the adjoining areas of south Kolkata logged an average of 80mm.
