The trio it seems had decided to end their life more than a week back. On August 23, daughters Kheya and Mukuta Mukherjee met RBU vice-chancellor Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury. "I was in a meeting when the two had come to meet me. They said their father was on his death bed and that it is his wish that all his property be donated to our university and Visva-Bharati," said Basu Ray Chaudhury.

"It was heartening to know that someone wants to donate their property to a university. I asked them why they chose us and they said their father believes in Rabindranath Tagore's philosophy and thought and wants it to be propagated further," said Basu Ray Chaudhury.

"What struck me was the fact that they were in a hurry to give away everything to the university and wanted the process to get completed quickly. I told them that such things take time as we would have to get all the property papers, consent letter, application and then send it to our legal team for necessary checks. I asked them to come back the next day with all papers and they agreed," said the V-C.

The university officials were taken aback after the news of the suicide. "Tagore had received so much pain in life but had fought his sorrow. I do not understand why a family, which has so much respect for Tagore's philosophy and writings would not consider fighting their sorrow? Maybe they gave in to grief," said Basu Ray Chaudhury.

The university however made it clear that none of the four members of the family had any kinds of association with the RBU or were among the regular visitors at Jorasanko.
