Howrah bus accident toll rises to 12

The death toll in bus accident at the Howrah station here rose to 12 with a child succumbing to his injuries early today, official sources said. The child died at Howrah Orthopaedic Hospital.

Eight persons were killed on the spot while three others died in hospital yesterday. Of the dead, three were women.

The accident occurred when a minibus lost control while overtaking another vehicle, broke through the railings of Bankim Setu and plunged 40 feet below on railway tracks of Howrah station at about 3.45 pm.

Before touching the ground, the Sankrail-Howrah minibus hit the overhead traction wires producing a flash.
Power supply in the traction wires was switched off as a precautionary measure for a brief period. Due to this and blocking of the tracks by the wreckage, train services at the station were disrupted for a few hours.
