The Union human resource development ministry has pulled up the state government on the poor education infrastructure. The HRD advisory is on two counts, an extremely low teacher student ratio and a fewer number of colleges per lakh of population.
The advisory has been given on the basis of the findings of a recent survey. The survey has been conducted jointly by the Union ministry for human resource development, Confederation of Indian Industry and Delloitte India and reveals the sorry state of college education in West Bengal.
As per the survey, West Bengal has been ranked 13th among 29 Indian states. In its note, the HRD ministry has pointed out there is only 1 teacher out for 30.2 college students. The national figure is 1 teacher for 13.1 college students.
Another astonishing phenomenon that is typical of West Bengal is the number of non-teaching staff exceeds teachers. As per central records, while the number of teaching staff is 44,000, the number of non- teaching college staff in 53,000.
The state also has eight colleges for every lakh of population. The national statistic is a much healthier 25 colleges of every lakh of population.
