It is back to the classroom for comrades in West Bengal. Prompted by a sense of realisation that a majority of comrades have deviated from the Leftist ideology, the CPI(M) has decided to set up permanent education centres in the districts.
The decision was taken on the first day of the two-day state committee meeting of CPI(M) that started here from Monday. The meeting was presided over by politburo member and the former commerce & industries minister, Nirupam Sen.
According to a press statement issued by the West Bengal state committee of CPI(M) here on Monday, the state committee has decided to enforce regularisation of “party education” on the basis of specific syllabus.
“For this purpose, special initiative will be taken to set up permanent education centres in all the districts of West Bengal,” the press statement read.
Sources in the state committee said, “The tradition of conducting and attending party classes started fading out since the end nineties. But the state committee has decided to resurrect the system and that too on the basis of a specific syllabus,” a senior state committee member said.
A major part of the meeting was consumed by discussions over the forthcoming panchayat polls in the state. Party insiders said the CPI(M) state secretary and the Left Front chairman in West Bengal asked for immediate completion of the selection of candidates for the panchayat elections.

{{/usCountry}}“The stress is on giving more women and young candidates. At the same time, the nature of population in the locality should also have to be kept in mind while selecting candidates,” a state committee member said.
This ideally means in pockets with majority of minority population, the selection of candidates would be among them. Similarly pockets with majority from the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, candidates would be selected from among them only,” a state committee member said.
In pockets, where the CPI(M) or the Left Front would not able to field candidates at all, there the plan is to back the independent candidates.
The state CPI(M) leadership on Monday inducted three new faces in its state committee in West Bengal.
The three new faces are Ritabrata Banerjee, the allIndia general secretary of the party’s student wing, SFI, Atanu Saha, the chief reporter of the party organ in Bengali, Ganashakti and former student leader, Tapas Singha.
