Overnight torrential rain flooded the city and its outskirts on Tuesday once again, throwing traffic out of gear and forcing people indoors and leaving eight people dead. The rains which abated in the afternoon came back with renewed vigour and created fresh havoc in the city.

The city suffered from a sinking feeling when several hours of heavy shower flooded the streets, disrupting rail and road transport for hours. Air traffic too was delayed due to rain, which led to the closer of the runway for nearly 55 minutes.

Vast parts of Kolkata remained waterlogged hours after the rain had stopped and people were left wondering why the civic body has failed to undertake appropriate measures, especially when the civic bosses had made tall claims after the first rain of this monsoon played havoc.
The meteorological department has forecasted more heavy rainfalls and thundershowers in the next 48 hours.

"A low pressure centre has formed over north-east Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas. This will lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall in Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata," said the Met dept regional director GC Debnath.
