A court in Jhargram town of West Midnapore district remained closed for the third consecutive day on Thursday on account of lawyers protesting against transport becoming paralysed because of a Maoist blockade.

The bar association gave a call for an indefinite suspension of work. Jhargram is about 150 km southwest of Kolkata.
The police can’t arrest anyone because the arrested have to be produced in a local court in 24 hours.
For the past week, the Jhargram sub-division has come to a standstill because of the strike called by the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) , a tribal body backed by the Maoists.
“We sought administrative measures to normalise the transport system but they failed to give us any assurance,” Kajal Mahato, a member of the bar association, told HT.
“We are aware of the crisis. A meeting with the lawyers may take place in a day or two,” P. Ulaganathan, sub-divisional officer, Jhargram, told HT.
The PCAPA is protesting the failure of the police to produce two of their supporters, Raju Adak and and Joydeb Bera, in court.
