The Jhargram sub-divisional court in West Midnapore district ordered that Mahato be kept in judicial custody till Oct 23, turning down the appeal of the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) which had sought 15 days more police remand of the tribal leader.

Mahato, who has been spearheading a movement against alleged police excesses, was arrested Sep 26 near Lalgarh. Later, the CID brought him to Kolkata for interrogation.
