The notorious auto drivers of this city seem to be out of transport minister Madan Mitra control. Even after his orders, the cops have still not been able to arrest the auto drivers who beat up former police inspector.

“We have identified the drivers, and located their residence but they are all absconding. We are trying to book them as soon as possible,” an officer from Chetla police station said.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon when retired cop and Parnasree resident Prabir Baran Sarkar dared to protest against rash driving on Chetla Bridge. Sarkar received serious injuries on his nose and back and scratches on his neck as auto drivers beat him up.

Repeated efforts from Sarkar to seek help from the toll free help lines of Kolkata police went in vain. Finally, the residents of Chetla reached Sarkar’s relatives house in Dhakuria to lodge a complaint.

“The media portrays as if we are not showing enough efforts to tackle the auto menace. This is a misinterpretation of facts. I have asked the Chetla police station to nab the accused by Monday evening,” Mitra said.

“Earlier also whenever Mitra has ordered cops to arrest auto drivers, the local Trinamool leaders pressurise us to book them only under bailable sections,” a police officer said.
