Divisions in the West Bengal Congress came to the fore again with the Trinamool Congress saying it would not wait indefinitely for a tie-up for the Lok Sabha elections and was giving the party a week to ten days.
While Congress working president Pradip Bhattacherjee and senior PCC leader Subrata Mukherjee, welcomed an alliance, CLP leader Manas Bhunia, who has been critical of the TC for the defection of two senior party leaders, wanted one on 'honourable terms'.
"There is scope for seat adjustments between the Congress, Trinamool Congress and other secular parties," Bhattacherjee told PTI in Kolkata.
Conceding that the final decision would be taken by the high command, Bhattacherjee, known to be close to Union External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, said "We will express our opinion to the central leadership. PCC leaders will meet very shortly to discuss seat adjustments."
Asked to comment specifically on TC chief Mamata Banerjee's assertion yesterday that it was not possible for her to wait indefinitely and she would wait for seven to ten days, Bhattacherjee replied "I have no comment."
Senior PCC leader Subrata Mukherjee, who was openly for an alliance, said "I will talk to Pranabda on the issue".
