There was panic all around Kolkata with people rushing down high rise buildings, especially in the business district.
Kolkata Metro rail authorities suspended metro services between 2:40pm and 3:05pm to check whether there was any damage to the tracks and the walls underground. Services were resumed after no abnormalities were detected.
Panic was intense at the high rises of the I-T companies in the Salt Lake Sector V. There were unsubstantiated reports of a few government buildings developing cracks. One such building is the new 10-storey administrative building that houses the South 24 Parganas zilla parishad office in Alipore.
Warning of turbulence was issued to Bengal fishermen who would go out to the seas. Those who have already gone out have been asked to return.
