A 40-year-old agriculture labourer, Ananta Dalui, was shot dead in a potato field at Chandraban village under Arambag police station and Officer-in-Charge of Khankul police Sukomal Das and a constable were injured by bullets when they intervened in Majhpur village, police sources said.

The clashes erupted in three villages under Khanakul, Arambagh and Purshura police stations with members of the groups attacking each other with guns, bombs, bows and arrows, the sources said, adding several houses were ransacked.

Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen told reporters in Kolkata that the person killed was claimed by the Trinamool Congress as its supporter, but according to the police the man had no political affiliation.

The condition of officer Das, who was injured in the attack and was rushed to the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, was stated to be out of danger, Sen said.
